Transitioning Into Fall Skin Care

As the weather, and environment around you starts to change, so does your skins needs. In the summer, it was all about SPF and trying to mattify the shine from your skins natural oils. As the air gets dryer, make sure you are taking the proper steps to properly care for your skin. So here are some tips to combat dry, dull, flaky skin.
Humidifiers
Having a humidifier in your bedroom is a great move for healthy skin. The dry air is slowly sucking the moisture out of your skin as you sleep. This is a very simple step that will help you wake up with supple skin, and help prevent wrinkles.
Don't Forget SPF
Just because you are not laying out in the sun, or it's overcast outside, doesn't mean you can forgo using daily SPF. Walking around outside and even sitting in your office near a window, the suns UV rays are still reaching your skin. Remember that 90% of wrinkles are caused by sun damage. You can almost entirely prevent getting wrinkles! Get in the habit of applying it daily or finding a moisturizer that contains SPF in it.
Eye Creams
The skin around your eyes is the most delicate skin on your body. That being said, it is the first to dry out. Invest in a good eye cream you can apply before bed. Remember whenever applying anything around your eyes to use your ring finger. This is because it is the weakest finger and won't apply too much pressure around the area.
Retinoids
You wouldn't want to use these in the summer as they increase your chance of sunburn with exposure to the sun. These are beneficial in the colder months for two reasons. Reason Number 1 is that it is an exfoliant in its own unique way. It will help you shed your dead summer skin. Reason Number 2 is it will get rid of any sun spots you acquired during the summer. This will leave you with a nice clean slate to begin the new season with. Retinoids are beneficial no matter your skin type or age. If you are younger and acne prone, it helps clear breakouts. If you are more mature and concerned about wrinkles, it helps eliminate fine lines and wrinkles with continued use.
Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Your scalp also dries out more in the fall/winter months, and can lead to flaking dandruff. It might be time to switch up your shampoo and conditioner to address this.
Cleansing Oils
Summer skin concerns were keeping the oil at bay. A lot of face washes strip your skins natural oils. A great new product to invest in is a cleansing oil. Oils dissolve oils. It's a fact, like dissolves like. Using a cleansing oil to wash your face will remove sebum, which can clog pores, and will also leave your face moisturized, not stripped.
Body Lotion and Shower Gels
Switch from light refreshing lotions and body washes to a nourishing and moisturizing one. I like to steal a little trick I learned from nail salons. I mix lotion with oil and cover my entire body a few minutes after I shower. I feel it absorbs easier and makes me feel luxurious and pampered.
Cuticle Oil and Hand Creams
Speaking of nails, to keep your hands and feet from drying out and cracking, make sure to apply cuticle oil and a heavy hand cream. I massage apricot oil into my cuticles before bed, apply vaseline on my feet and cover in socks, and apply a heavy hand cream. Cuticle oil is important to not only keep your hands looking nice, but to help prevent any tearing from hangnails caused by dried out lifting skin.
Lip Therapy
My lips are generally dry and chapped in general. But in winter, it worsens to the point they crack and can split and it is very painful. Drink a lot of water and keep a good lip moisturizer on hand. You can now purchase a mask just for your lips. So make sure to exfoliate those lips and apply a lip balm. How will you wear the ever popular matte lip looks with flaky lips?!
Night Creams and Overnight Masks
Night creams are just a heavier cream than something you would wear during the day. It takes longer to soak in so that's why they are applied at night. These are great to keep your face moisturized. Another option is an overnight mask. An overnight mask is a mask that works with your body to help repair your skin as you sleep. Don't sleep with one on every night as your skin does need to breathe at night.
So hope this information will aid you in transitioning into your fall skin care routine.
